Importance of Physical Fitness

Everyone knowalkingws that physical fitness and activity levels helps improve and maintain optimum health and wellness, reduces our chance of chronic disease, and is extremely beneficial in weight loss and maintenance but it is unfortunate that with all of this information, a very low percentage of people still do not actively engage in it. We know that at least 60% of Americans do not get enough physical activity and less than 25% of U.S. adults do not participate in recreational or leisure time to improve their physical fitness levels. Obviously there needs to be something done about that before it gets much worse than that.


Reaping the benefits from staying active doesn't mean that you have to go jump on treadmill for an hour or join the local gym. It is important to understand that there are so many physical fitness activities that can help us accumlated the recommended amount of physical activity during our day. (30 minutes of moderate intense activity on 5 days if not all 7 days a week is recommended).

Here are some ideas to get you moving throught your day:

 

Taking the stairs instead of the
elevator in public buildings.

Push mowing the yard or gardening.

Taking your kids or your pets for a walk.

Parking further away from the shopping mall or at work instead of the closest stall to the front door.

 

One of the most common reasons we don't get enough exercise is because we live in such a fast paced lifestyle that we don't have enough time to add anything else into our busy schedules. Each of the above activities do not requite any additional equipment, funds, are quite easy to do, and can be completed during everyday tasks.

 

Achieving the recommended daily amount of physical activity in your busy schedule may seem difficult at first. However, today the new 2008 physical activity guidelines are focused more on encouraging different types and amounts of activities for better health.

A well balance and effective physical fitness regimine no only includes cardiovascular training but also flexiblity, balance, and muscular strength and endurance. As part of your workout routine it is quite important to include a healthy balance of all of these componets to maximize your body's full fitness potential. Flexilbity is important because it helps to keep muscles agile and less prone to injury. There are several ways to increase your body's flexibility including Pilates, Yoga, and a proper stretching program. Omron Pedometers are a great way to measure your daily step totals.

 

Incorporating balance and coordination routines into your workout plan are also important for your body to function properly. Yoga and Pilates are also great programs to include to improve in this area.

 

Strength training and weight-lifting programs are extremely important, especially as we age to include in our fitness programs but yet they are the most commonly ignored too, especially among women. As we age, our bodies start to automatically lose muscle mass and gain fat. Participating in a regular strength training program is therefore very important but often overlooked. Lifting weights doesn't necessarily mean getting bigger which is often a huge misconception. I love to strength train as I feel as I am preparing my body to become less injury prone and I just plain feel and look better.
